Qatar’s Armed Forces has selected Finmeccanica’s Selex to provide air surveillance and a defence system to secure the country’s airspace.

Under this contract, the company will supply a system composed of a network of Kronos radars and associated command and control centres.

The latest deal is worth hundreds of millions of euros, the company stated.

Finmeccanica CEO Mauro Moretti said: "Air defence and surveillance systems are fundamental for a nation and Qatar has selected Finmeccanica to provide this strategic asset.

"The trust that has been placed on us will drive an even stronger commitment from Finmeccanica in this strategic region".

Kronos is a multifunctional radar based on advanced active electronically scanned array (AESA) technology and belongs to a family of radars designed for strategic surveillance and tactical air defence.

It is widely used to protect vital, civil and military assets and expeditionary forces through detecting and tracking all air targets, flying from very low to high altitude.

So far, Selex has delivered 25 Kronos radar systems to international customers, with the devices currently operational on land and at sea.

Currently, the Kronos radars are available in five versions, supporting all military requirements for surveillance and air defence using a single radar type.

All versions of this radar are compact and equipped with automated C2 functionalities, multiple data links and a full set of communication systems.

The radar allows high levels of networking, integration and interoperability with legacy systems, such as command and control systems, as well as SAM weapon systems.
