Safran Helicopter Engines has been contracted to supply the RTM322-01/9A version engines for the Qatar Emiri Air Force’s (QEAF) fleet of 28 NH90 multi-role military helicopters.

Last month, Qatar signed a more than €3bn contract with the NHIndustries consortium for the acquisition of the 28 units as part of its military helicopter fleet modernisation plan.

The Middle East nation has ordered 16 helicopters in tactical transport (TTH) configuration and the remaining 12 aircraft in naval (NFH) version.

The RTM322 engine boasts shaft horsepower of 2,100 to 2,600 and is equipped with advanced technologies to perform in extremely demanding environments.

The RTM322-01/9A version features 7% additional power than the baseline RTM322-01/9 variant, which helps conduct missions in ‘hot and high’ conditions.

Safran will also deliver the Arriel 2D for Qatar’s 16 H125 light single-engine helicopters.

“The RTM322 has once again demonstrated that it is the best engine for the NH90.”

Safran Helicopter Engines Heavy Helicopter Engine Programs vice-president Florent Chauvancy: “The RTM322 has once again demonstrated that it is the best engine for the NH90.

“Since our acquisition of the programme in 2013, we have generated a high level of operator satisfaction through increasing engine robustness and operability, and by implementing simpler and more efficient maintenance practices.”

The engines for the Qatar Armed Forces NH90 helicopter fleet will be assembled by the company in Bordes, France.

Following assembly, the engines will be handed over for integration into NH90 TTH version to Airbus Helicopters’ facility in Marignane and for the NFH configuration to the Leonardo Venice-Tessera facility in Northern Italy.

According to Safran, 1,100 RTM322 have been delivered to customers across the globe. Around 80% of the worldwide NH90 fleet is currently powered by Safran Helicopter Engines.
