The defence ministries of Russia and Myanmar have reached an agreement for the supply of Pantsir-S1 air defence systems.

A document has been signed by Russian Military Department deputy head, colonel general Alexander Fomin in the presence of Minister of Defence of the Russian Federation Sergei Shoigu and Myanmar Armed Forces commander-in-chief senior general Min Aung Hlaing.

As part of the agreement, Myanmar will also receive Orlan-10E unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and radar stations in addition to a batch of self-propelled anti-aircraft missile and gun systems Pantsir-S1.

The Pantsir-S1 baseline system comprises 12 57E6 surface-to-air guided missiles and two 30mm 2A38M cannons.

It is designed to defend ground installations against a variety of enemy targets such as fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters, ballistic and cruise missiles, precision-guided munitions and small UAVs.

Each Pantsir system is capable of engaging up to four missiles at a time.

It is designed by Russia’s KBP Instrument Design Bureau of Tula and manufactured by the Ulyanovsk Mechanical Plant.

Russia and Myanmar have established a legal and regulatory base for military-technical cooperation for almost two decades.

This cooperation has benefitted Myanmar to procure and maintain Russian defence equipment MiG-29 planes, Yakolev-130 combat training jets, Pechora-2M air defence missile systems, armoured vehicles and artillery pieces and more.

In a separate development, the two countries have signed a deal on the safety of aircraft flights. The signing of this agreement is part of the continuation of the partnership between the Russian and Myanmar defence departments.
