Boeing has secured a $2.2bn contract to modernise maritime patrol capabilities of P-8A Poseidon aircraft worldwide.

The contract covers modernisation of at least 17 P-8A Poseidon aircraft for the US, Australia, and the UK.

Boeing's military aircraft mobility, surveillance, and engagement division and P-8 programme manager Jamie Burgess said: “The P-8A is a textbook example of Boeing’s commercial derivative expertise.

The US Navy will receive 11of the aircraft, while the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) will expand its P-8A fleet by four units. The UK Royal Air Force is expected to receive the first of two P-8A jets in 2019.

The deal includes options for 32 additional aircraft, which if exercised would increase the total contract value to $6.8bn. It also includes procurement of long-lead parts for future orders, Boeing stated.

Based on Boeing’s next-generation 737-800 commercial airplane, the P-8A is claimed to offer advanced anti-submarine, anti-surface warfare, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities.

Powered by two CFM56-7 engines, the P-8 can fly up to 41,000ft and travel up to 490 knots. Able to operate in all flight regimes, the model can also self-deploy up to 4,500 miles from base without refuelling.

To date, Boeing delivered 53 Poseidons to the Navy and two to the RAAF.

The US Navy has deployed multiple squadrons worldwide since operations began in 2013 and recorded more than 96,000 flight hours to date, according to the statement.
