The Spanish Air Force has selected Indra’s InShield direct infra-red counter-measure (DIRCM) system for integration on its nine A400M military transport aircraft.

The InShield DIRCM system is an advanced solution that helps protect aircraft against attack from air-to-air and surface-to-air infrared guided missiles.

The contract has been awarded by the Organisation for Joint Armament Co-operation (OCCAR), which manages the international A400M programme, on behalf of the Spanish Ministry of Defence.

Under the terms of the deal, Indra will also have to provide the A400M fleet with related instrument landing system (ILS) products and services that would help integrate the InShield DIRCM system in the logistic support chain of the airforce.

The ILS products and services comprise tools used to programme the system libraries, including jamming sequences programming, which would enable the system to operate against all present and future threats.

Based on its own intelligence, the Spanish Air Force will be able to complete and manage the system libraries without any external dependencies.

“The solution can help protect aircraft during the take-off and landing manoeuvres, as well as exposed situations typically used for attacks.”

Incorporated with advanced electro-optical technology and solid-state laser technologies, the InShield DIRCM system can be used to detect and manage several simultaneous threats, as well as neutralise missiles instantly without any manual operation.

The solution can help protect aircraft during the take-off and landing manoeuvres, as well as exposed situations typically used for attacks.

The self-protection system installed on the A400M will ensure the survivability of the platform, personnel and cargo when deployed for international operations, as well as in areas threatened by terrorist or non-governmental groups.

In 2017, Airbus Military (AMSL), which leads the A400M programme for the OCCAR, successfully completed the critical design review (CDR) of the InShield DIRCM system installation for the A400M aircraft.
