The Israeli Air Force’s (IAF) Flight Test Squadron is carrying out a series of tests to upgrade the capability of providing early warnings of possible helicopter collisions, ensuring enhanced helicopter safety.

The capability is based on an application installed in the ‘Mobileye’ system integrated onto every aircraft deployed by the airforce. This helps reduce the danger of collision when an aircraft is airborne.

The notifications of each of the Mobileye system come with a timecode that determines the time when the notification was sent. The information provided helps the IAF to measure the range between two helicopters.

With the successful completion of the tests, the capability will be integrated into the IAF Helicopter Division as part of a system upgrade to detect proximity and prevent possible collisions.

IAF Flight Test Squadron test leader major A said: “The helicopters are notified with a beep, which increases in volume, reminiscent of the ‘Mobileye’ system in vehicles.

“This beep is heard loudly throughout the helicopter, and acts as an alarm a number of seconds before impact.”

“The capability will be integrated into the IAF Helicopter Division as part of a system upgrade to detect proximity and prevent possible collisions.”

The first stage of the series of tests conducted by the airforce involved a ground trial. The test was carried out on two helicopters, one of which was airborne while the other remained on the ground.

The airforce evaluated the system’s reaction to the helicopters during the trial, in addition to demonstrating its efficiency and potential.

The second stage of the test series will be carried out on two airborne helicopters.

If successful, the Mobileye system will undergo an evaluation in the 124th Squadron, which operates the ‘Yanshuf’ (Black Hawk) helicopter.

Following successful completion of the evaluation tests, the system is expected to become operational with the IAF.
