The UK Government and BAE Systems have received an invitation to participate in a tender as part of Finland’s HX fighter jet replacement programme.

The invitation to tender has been received by the two parties on behalf of the four Eurofighter nations – the UK, Germany, Italy, and Spain. It has also been received in support of partner companies across Europe, including BAE Systems, Leonardo – Aircraft Division, and Airbus Defence and Space.

The Eurofighter Typhoon jet is being considered as part of the Finnish Defence Forces’ HX fighter programme that has been designed to replace the operational capability of the Finnish Air Force’s existing F/A-18 Hornet aircraft fleet, which is expected to be phased out from 2025.

BAE Systems Finland managing director Paul Hitchcock said: “We welcome today’s formal announcement from the Finnish Ministry of Defence.

“We will study the request in detail before delivering our response, but we are confident we can present a compelling offer on behalf of the Eurofighter consortium.”

As part of the replacement programme, five companies from across the globe have been requested to give a quotation on their respective aircraft that, if selected, would replace the Hornet fleet.
