Raytheon Technologies subsidiary Collins Aerospace has received a contract from the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) to support the US Air Force’s (USAF) F-16 and B-2 fleets.

The ten-year contract is valued at $34m and involves the provision of gearbox repair materiel.

According to the company, the gearbox serves as the centre of the aircraft’s transmission system, which is used for changing rotational speed.

The latest contract marks the company’s largest ‘supplier initiated ordering’ programme so far.

It is also the company’s newly created organisation ‘Defense Sustainment’ organisation’s first such opportunity under the ‘Beyond Break Fix strategy’.

Under this programme, Collins Aerospace will strive to provide Hill Air Force Base (AFB) in Utah with a ‘guaranteed level of materiel availability’.

This will help the USAF enhance the readiness rates of its F-16 and B-2 fleets.

In addition, the company will help DLA lower carrying costs by regularly rotating the entire inventory and double inventory turns.

Collins Aerospace executive director Aaron Maue said: “This performance-based support approach represents a new level of collaboration between Collins Aerospace, the USAF and the DLA.

“By working together, we devised a solution that significantly enhances MRO efficiency, while improving fleet readiness.

“It’s the first win under our Beyond Break Fix programme, a company-wide wide sustainment and support initiative that focuses on materiel availability instead of transactional parts, thereby enabling us to better support the warfighter by increasing aircraft readiness rates.”

In December, Collins Aerospace Systems secured orders for the supply of 20 new Griffin-2 visual display systems (VDS).
