BAE Systems has secured a contract from the US Space Force (USSF) to deliver advanced military GPS receivers and chips for the troops.

The $247m contract was awarded by USSF’s Space and Missile Systems Center.

As agreed, BAE Systems will design and manufacture an advanced military M-Code GPS receiver and application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) to provide reliable GPS data with anti-jamming and anti-spoofing capabilities.

The contract was awarded under the Military GPS User Equipment Increment 2 Miniature Serial Interface programme that seeks to enhance capabilities for size-constrained and power-constrained military GPS applications by replacing legacy systems.

It emphasises the certification of an advanced ASIC and the development of an ultra-small, low-power GPS module, both of which will work with the military M-Code signal technology.

BAE Systems Navigation and Sensor Systems director Greg Wild said: “This programme enables us to further develop our core M-Code technology to deliver high-performance, next-generation GPS capabilities.

Contract work will be carried out at the company’s facility in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, US.

Delivery of the new GPS technology will provide soldiers with positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) capabilities, enabling them to execute missions in challenging electromagnetic environments.

Notably, BAE Systems completed the acquisition of Collins Aerospace Military GPS business last year. The business delivered around 1.5 million devices on more than 280 airborne, ground and weapon system platforms.

Currently, BAE Systems produces M-Code GPS receivers in multiple form factors while additional prototypes are in development for ground, weapons, and airborne mission applications.
