Hydrogen (H2)-powered rockets refer to rockets that are powered by hydrogen gas as their fuel source. These rockets use electrochemical reactions, specifically electrolysis, to produce hydrogen gas, which is then used as a propellant in the rocket engines. The electrolysis process involves splitting water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen gases using an electric current. The hydrogen gas produced is then stored and used as fuel to power the rocket engines, providing thrust for propulsion.

ArianeGroup (formerly Airbus Safran Launchers), a 50:50 joint venture between Airbus and Safran, is one of the leading innovators in H2 powered rockets. Some of the patents filed by the company are related to a rocket propulsion system comprising two separate cryogenic tanks filled with hydrogen as the first propellant and oxygen as the second propellant, a combustion chamber connected with a hydrogen-oxygen supply system, and an energy conversion unit to charge the gas pressure accumulators in the ballistic phase. The energy conversion unit has at least one fuel cell configured to generate electrical energy, which is utilized in high-pressure electrolysis to split water into hydrogen and oxygen for use as propellants again.
ArianeGroup has more than 40 years of experience in hydrogen-based rocket propulsion. It was the prime contractor for the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Ariane launch vehicles that used liquid hydrogen as the primary propulsion source. Hydrogen continues to be the main fuel for rocket engines since it has the lowest molecular weight but burns with extreme intensity when combined with an oxidizer such as liquid oxygen.
The aviation industry is seeking to leverage the lessons learned from liquid hydrogen-based rocket propulsion systems to develop future zero-emission aircraft. Airbus has engaged ArianeGroup to design, produce, and support the operations of a liquid hydrogen fueling system for its ZeroE fuel cell-powered demonstrator aircraft, while engineers from Airbus Defence and Space are working on optimized pressure vessel designs and rigorous safety standards in support of the development and industrialization of cryogenic tanks for liquid hydrogen storage.
