Bombs Away as Military Aircraft Show Success at Paris Air Show - 24 June 2009
As the 100th Paris Air Show drew to a close on 19 June, military aircraft saw more success in terms of fixed orders than their commercial counterparts. Fighter jets including the F-22 received orders from countries as far flung as India, Norway and Japan, and France’s Rafale jet also saw an increase in orders including 60 to the UAE. Boeing also received a one month reprieve for its delayed A400m while Airbus announced progress in the US Air Force’s refueling tanker bid by offering up its 777 to the table.
The real show success, however, were UAV’s which drew unprecedented interest from countries such as Israel, Germany, France and Spain among others. Rocket ScienceThe rapid development of the modern jet aircraft has opened the world up to affordable and convenient air travel but its initial learning curve was long and dangerous. This was particularly the case in Germany during the 1930s, when the Third Reich began to take a strong financial and supportive interest in the research of Wernher von Braun, who was experimenting with fitting liquid-fuel rockets to aircraft.
In an airforce-technology.com exclusive, Alex Hawkes spoke to Lutz Warsitz the son of Erich Warsitz, the test pilot for the German Air Force’s first HE 112 aircraft and the first man to fly with a jet engine.
