MBDA has announced that the UK is planning to equip its Protector remotely piloted air (RPA) system with the company's Brimstone precision strike missile.

If confirmed by the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD), the new unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) armed with the British weapon will enter service with the UK Royal Air Force (RAF).

The missile has been designed to strike fast moving, manoeuvring targets with both man in the loop post launch guidance and also autonomous post launch.

The MoD has recently signed a £100m deal with General Atomics Aeronautical Systems (GA-ASI) for the development of the Certifiable Predator B to replace the current fleet of MQ-9 Reaper UAVs.

MBDA will work alongside the UK MoD, the US Department of Defense and GA-ASI for integration trials and test firings of the missile.

The company said that the missile has already successfully completed a series of trial firings on MQ-9 Reaper in 2014.
