F-35 Lightning II

The US Department of Defense has awarded a F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) aircraft maintenance and support contract to Pratt & Whitney.

The $214m contract covers support services for propulsion systems, supply of hardware, and training course material and equipment.

Valid until April 2019, the deal covers the fighter aircraft fleet of the US Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps, and global users.

According to the Department of Defense, the contract combines purchases for the US Air Force ($102m), US Marine Corps ($57m), US Navy ($23m), international partners ($25m), and foreign military sales customers ($5m).

International partners in the JSF programme include the UK, Italy, the Netherlands, Turkey, Canada, Denmark, Norway, Australia, Singapore, and Israel.

Lockheed Martin, as the prime contractor, manufactures the forward fuselage and wings of the F-35 Lightning II aircraft, and is also responsible for its final assembly.

Northrop Grumman manufactures the centre-fuselage, and BAE Systems the aft fuselage and tails. Pratt & Whitney is the prime contractor for the F-35’s engine.

The multirole fighter combines stealth, agility and advanced technologies to provide the pilot with situational awareness, lethality and survivability. They will replace the F-16 and A-10 fleet of the US Air Force and complement the F/A-22.

On 23 November, Lockheed Martin Aeronautics was awarded a $12m contract to provide interim contractor support for F-35A Lightning II, located at Luke Air Force Base, Glendale, Arizona.
