The Italian Government has significantly reduced the number of Eurofighter Typhoon jets it has on order due to tight financial conditions.

Italian Defence Minister Ignazio La Russa said at Farnborough Air Show in the UK that Rome has decided to cut its planned purchase of Typhoon jets by 25 planes due to budget pressures.

Italy will save $2.6bn by buying 96 of 121 of the multirole aircraft ordered earlier for the Italian Air Force, according to UPI.

Russa said that Italy’s decision to reduce its order for Eurofighter will not affect the business of Finmeccanica, which is part of the consortium building the fighter jet.
