Swedish Gripen to Receive Upgrade

12 March 2010

The Swedish Air Force's fleet of Gripen fighter aircraft will receive an upgrade from Saab group, under a Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) contract.

Under the Skr2bn ($280m) four-year contract, Saab will upgrade the countermeasures and communication systems of the Gripen to enhance its operational effectiveness.

The upgrade will also include equipping the entire fleet with advanced weapons and new improved radar systems with increased range.

Saab will also take additional measures to reduce the operating costs, as well as the noise and emissions from test runs during engine maintenance.

Gripen is a multirole fighter aircraft capable of carrying out a range of air-to-air and air-to-surface missions.

The Swedish Air Force, which inducted the Gripen aircraft in 1997, now has a total of 204 such fighters in its arsenal.
