US B-52 Bombers to Get Communication Upgrade

30 September 2009

The US Air Force's B-52 fleet is to receive communication systems integrated with the extremely-high-frequency (EHF) system.

The new system will enable the exchange of information through the family of advanced beyond line-of-sight terminals (FAB-T), which enhance communications with the B-52 from ground, air and space platforms.

The first of three contract increments includes planning, risk mitigation and development of system requirements.

Increment two will cover the design and installation of the FAB-T communication hardware, and increment three will integrate the new system into the global information grid.

The total contract value is expected to be more than $100m.

The B-52's have also been up graded with a combat network communications technology network-centric upgrade and the SNIPER advanced targeting pod.
