The US Air Force’s (USAF) second space-based infrared system (SBIRS) geosynchronous (GEO-2) spacecraft has completed acoustic testing.

During the test, the spacecraft was paced through the maximum sound and vibration levels expected during launch into orbit.

GEO-2 is scheduled to perform thermal vacuum testing to validate its performance at temperatures greater than those expected during on-orbit operations.

US Air Force SBIRS Space Division chief Colonel Scott Larrimore said the SBIRS team will execute a thorough environmental test phase and deliver the much needed capabilities SBIRS GEO-2 will bring to warfighter.

The SBIRS satellites provide the US with improved missile warning capabilities and support other critical missions including missile defence, technical intelligence and battlespace awareness.

Lockheed Martin is the SBIRS prime contractor while the team is led by the Infrared Space Systems Directorate at the US Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center, US.
