The last three of 111 C-5 Galaxy aircraft are receiving a modernised avionics suite upgrade at Travis Air Force Base, US, under the C-5 avionics modernisation programme (AMP).

The C-5 AMP is the first phase of a two-phase programme, while the second is known as the reliability enhancement and re-engining programme (RERP).

The first phase includes a new all-weather flight control system and autopilot, a new communications suite, flat-panel displays and enhanced navigation and safety system, while the second phase involves replacing current engines with new CF-6 General Electric engines.

The upgrades will provide increased reliability, maintainability and better fuel efficiency to the aircraft, while also extending its life past 2040.

Work on the three aircraft will be completed by May 2012, two years ahead of schedule, and the aircraft will be reassigned to the West Virginia Air National Guard, US.

The $70m C-5 AMP was awarded to Lockheed Martin to upgrade all US Air Force C-5 A, B, and C model aircraft in 2004.
