Royal Air Force (RAF) Lyneham’s Hercules fleet has been moved to a new RAF base at Brize Norton in Oxfordshire, UK.

Lyneham, the largest operational RAF base, has been the home of the Hercules transport aircraft for 45 years.

The base will cease to be a flying station by the end of September this year and will close by 31 December 2012 as part of a strategic review of military bases announced in 2002.

The UK Ministry of Defence is yet to decide whether to use the base for a military purpose after the closure.

RAF Brize Norton’s Station commander group captain Dom Stamp said the new base would be the hub of air transport and air-to-air refuelling and would enable the RAF to provide a more efficient and adaptable response to future challenges.
