The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has agreed to provide the Royal Air Force (RAF) with 2,000lb of Enhanced Paveway III laser guided bombs to boost its mission in Libya.

The Paveway III bombs are capable of penetrating reinforced buildings and will enable the RAF to attack command centres and communications nodes in Libya.

The bombs could be used quickly to help protect civilians from being targeted by the Libyan rebels.

UK Defence Secretary Liam Fox said, “The introduction of Enhanced Paveway III bombs is another way in which we are developing our tactics to protect civilians and achieve the intent of UN Security Council Resolutions 1970 and 1973.”

The RAF’s arsenal also includes Enhanced Paveway II, Paveway IV, and dual-mode seeker Brimstone bombs, according to BBC News.
