Iraq is set to purchase Czech-built L-159 light attack aircraft in a move to modernise its helicopter fleet.

The L-159 ALCA is a single-seat, light multirole combat aircraft developed by Aero Vodochody based on the design and configuration of the L39 Albatros and L59 family of combat trainers.

The jet has been designed to carry out a variety of air-to-air, air-to-ground and reconnaissance missions.

The aircraft is equipped with an advanced multimode all-weather radar and can perform a range of Nato-standard payloads, including air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles as well as laser guided bombs.

The Czech Republic offered 24 combat aircraft to Iraq in mid April, according to RIA Novosti.
