Russia will deploy a second regiment of advanced S-400 Triumf air defence systems near Moscow, as part of the air and missile defence network around the Russian capital, the Defence Ministry has said.

The S-400 (code named SA-21 Growler) air defence regiment consists of two or three battalions equipped with four air defence systems each.

The system uses a range of missiles, optimised for engaging ballistic and cruise missiles and engages targets at a range of 400km at an altitude of 40,000m-50,000m.

Russia has plans to arm 56 battalions with S-400 systems by 2020.

The first S-400 regiment has been deployed in Electrostal, near Moscow, Russia, according to RIA Novosti.
