Iran has successfully test fired two indigenously built air defence missile systems, Mersad (Ambush) and Sayyad 2 (Hunter), as it marked its National Army Day.

Mersad is a mid-range anti-aircraft system, fired two Shahin missiles that hit their designated targets from an air defence base in the northern province of Semnan, Iran.

The anti-aircraft system, developed in April 2010, is the nation’s first advanced air defence system and is based on the US-built MIM-23 Hawk.

The system is capable of hitting targets at distances as far as 150km and is also capable of destroying advanced airplanes in low and mid altitudes.

The Sayyad-2 surface to air defence missile system was also successfully test launched.
