The Logic of Warfighting Experiments

Date
22 Jan 2010

Abstract

Transformation decisions rest on the proposition that developing better military capabilities will produce or cause better military effects. For this reason, experimentation is uniquely suited to support transformation decisions as experimentation involves changing something and observing the effects so that we can reach conclusions about cause and effect.

Experimentation has proven itself in science and technology, yielding dramatic advances. The purpose of this paper then is to see if we can we apply the same experiment methods to the military transformation process.

In other words, can robust experimentation methods from the sciences can be adapted and applied to military experimentation in order to provide a foundation for continual advancement in military effectiveness?
