With the TARES LR system Rheinmetall Defence Electronics (RDE), a subsidiary of the Rheinmetall Group, is presenting a forward-looking solution for the networked operation of reconnaissance systems including effectors.
TARES LR stands for Tactical Advanced REcce System, which is a combination of the KZO reconnaissance system with a Strike - Long Range Element of an attack UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle). Both system elements (KZO and attack UAV) are networked and are used as a complete integrated system. Here the open system architecture also provides for networked solutions with other both existing and future reconnaissance and effect systems.
The TARES LR system is a reconnaissance and effector system for the precise combating of targets with stand-off capability. It is based on the existing KZO ground control station for the joint command of reconnaissance and attack UAVs from one ground station. This means that the reconnaissance information from the KZO reconnaissance UAV and the target data from the attack UAVs are simultaneously available in real time at the same ground control station. This results in optimum usage and control of the integrated system network.
Successful target reconnaissance by the reconnaissance UAV is followed by direct vectoring of the attack UAV. Here one or more attack UAVs can be vectored from a "Magazine in the Sky" or deployed from the ground.
During combat it is possible to not only verify the image of the target transmitted by the attack UAV but also simultaneously the overall image from the KZO UAV.
Due to the direct data link from the ground to the attack UAV it is possible to control the attack UAVs at any time under line-of-sight conditions. With missions or flight phases without a direct line-of-sight from the ground to the attack UAV (e.g. particularly in the final approach phase) the effectors may nevertheless leave the direct link range of their own data links. In such a case the data relay on board the KZO UAV takes over the data path. This provides for the indirect transmission not only of real-time target images from the attack UAV but also the check-back signals of the operator ("man-in-the-loop" function) until impact. Transmission of the overall image from the KZO of course still takes place in parallel. After impact by the attack UAV this also permits monitoring of the effective action.
The system structure and equipment selected result in significant added value for other applications as well. With networked operations the KZO relay permits the time, echelon and attitude-compatible distribution of graphical information to other users, e.g. in helicopters, vehicles or soldiers in the field. With its capabilities regarding "reconnaissance and effective action from one source" the TARES LR system fulfils the requirements arising from the modern-day operational scenarios facing the armed forces. The system devised by RDE is designed as an extension to the KZO basic system and thus represents a low-risk and effective solution for swiftly closing gaps in capability for stand-off, prompt and precise effective action.
