The Doncasters Group Ltd, a leading global manufacturer of precision components and assemblies for the aerospace industry, has entered into an alliance with Hamilton Sundstrand to manufacture turbo-machinery for the Boeing 787 auxiliary power unit, the APS5000.
With potential revenues in excess of $300 million, this represents the largest single contract secured by Doncasters in its 226-year history.
Using the full breadth of capabilities from its sites in Europe, North America and Mexico, Doncasters will manufacture the entire turbine section, all structural components and most of the key compressor components for the APS5000. Additionally, the company is co-locating an engineering team at Hamilton Sundstrand Power Systems in San Diego, California, to support component and subassembly design efforts.
“We are extremely pleased that Doncasters was selected for a role on this highly prestigious engine program, against very aggressive and talented competition,” said Joseph E. Fritz, Doncasters Vice President Sales and Marketing for North America.
Doncasters will supply kits, subsystems and assemblies on this and other Hamilton Sundstrand programs from forgings, fabrications, single crystal casting, equiaxed grain castings and precision-machined components produced in many of its sites worldwide. Doncasters New England Airfoil Products in Connecticut will manage the overall supply chain, coordinating the manufacture and supply of the required components from across the Group.
Eric J. Lewis, CEO of The Doncasters Group, comments, “This contract marks a significant step forward for Doncasters in the North American market. Our flexible multi-facility manufacturing capabilities, supply chain expertise and effective customer support package meant that we are uniquely positioned to secure this long-term partnership with Hamilton Sundstrand.”
Jay Lapointe, Vice-President of Procurement for Hamilton Sundstrand, said, “This contract marks the beginning of a major supply chain transformation to part family-based sourcing. Doncasters’ capabilities and diverse portfolio position them to strategically align with Hamilton Sundstrand.”
