Sermatech announces a new chromium free metallic ceramic coating for aerospace applications where corrosion and oxidation resistance is required. This coating, designated SermeTel® CF 7000, has been formulated to have application and performance properties similar to hexavalent chromium coatings such as SermeTel® W.
The coating will meet the severe test requirements specified in aircraft OEM specifications, including exposure to 1000 hour scribed salt spray and thermal oxidation testing at temperatures up to 1000°F (538°C). In addition, the coating has shown equivalent performance to a SermeTel W coating that has been exposed to cycling at 850°F (454°C) for 7.5 hours followed by 5% salt fog testing per ASTM B117 for 15.5 hours for a total of ten cycles, with no pitting or substrate corrosion.
The coating can be applied by the same spray, dip or brush application and curing methods currently used for the chromium containing metallic ceramics, and can achieve the same thickness ranges. It will meet new regulations restricting the use of materials containing hexavalent chromium and eliminate the need to impose extensive worker exposure controls mandated by government regulations that reduce threshold exposure levels (TLV's). SermeTel CF 7000 is covered by US and EU patents.
