Saab - Aircraft Integrated Electronic Warfare Systems

Saab offers technology, products and services within Electronic Warfare (EW), as well as airborne mission and utility sub-systems, to defence forces and industries worldwide.

AIR, LAND AND NAVAL ELECTRONIC WARFARE SYSTEMS

We offer a broad product range in the electronic warfare area for air, land and naval applications. The product range includes jammers, ELINT / Electronic Support Measure (ESM) systems, and stand-alone or fully integrated self-protection systems with laser, radar and missile approach warning functions and world-renowned countermeasure dispensing systems.

AIRCRAFT INTEGRATED EW SYSTEMS

Saab is the supplier of the Integrated Defensive Aids Suite (IDAS) for the Swedish NH90 helicopter, a multi-sensor warning system with radar, laser and missile-approach warning functions, integrated with the countermeasures dispenser system BOP. We also offer a compact version, called CIDAS.

Other IDAS platforms include the Eurocopter Puma and Super Puma, Agusta Westland A109 and Super Lynx 300, Boeing CH47 Chinook, Eurocopter Cougar, Denel Rooivalk and Oryx, Hindustan Aeronautics' advanced light helicopter, and the Lockheed C-130.

EWS 39 ELECTRONIC WARFARE SUITE

Saab delivers EWS 39, the EW suite for the Gripen multi-role fighter, to Sweden, Hungary, the Czech Republic and South Africa. The system consists of a radar warner, jammers and countermeasure dispensers.

The EWS 39 EW suite handles all types of off-board, integrated and pod-mounted jammers, chaff and flare dispensers. Together, these contribute to making the Gripen the world's most capable and cost-effective combat aircraft in operation today.

CIVIL AIRCRAFT MISSILE PROTECTION SYSTEM

The Saab Civil Aircraft Missile Protection System (CAMPS), is designed to be an integrated part of the aircraft to effectively counter the MANPADS threat against civil aircraft, troop transport, military special missions and VIP aircraft.

CAMPS consists of the MAW 300 UV-based missile approach warner, a central electronic unit and the BOA dispensers. BOA is an electromechanical dispenser designed to dispense a new, non-pyrotechnical type of IR decoy, developed by Chemring Countermeasures, which overcomes all the safety issues associated with pyrotechnical decoys.

RADAR WARNING RECEIVERS

Saab Radar Warning Receivers (RWR), are designed to cope with extremely dense environments, long-range weapons and all kinds of radars. They feature short reaction times, and the warning receivers have a combination of high sensitivity, high selectivity and 100% probability of intercept.

The RWR system for the German Tornado is the most recent advanced development going on as part of the Saab portfolio in the field of RWR systems. It is an application of our BOW family of advanced ESM and RWR.

LASER WARNING SYSTEMS

Saab's Laser Warning Systems (LWS), are characterised by high probability of intercept, a high angular accuracy threat-warning and a unique anti-reflection capability.

MISSILE APPROACH WARNING SENSORS

Missile Approach Warning (MAW) sensors detect the characteristic UV radiation emitted from missile motors during their burn time. The system can handle up to eight approaching missiles simultaneously.

ADVANCED COUNTERMEASURE DISPENSERS

In passive countermeasures Saab has long been a frontrunner. Our very successful BOL series of dispensers help pilots stay focused on the task at hand. BOL installations are conformal and can be integrated into the missile pylons on fighter aircraft.

The conventional way to deflect IR guided missiles is to eject flares, but modern missiles are less easily fooled. We therefore employ a technique that forms clouds of hot particles, creating a decoy that not only emits the right heat-signature, but is spatially convincing too.

The BOL can also be loaded with chaffs. Our system uses the airflow created by the wingtip vortices of the aircraft to achieve a fast-blooming cloud to decoy radars.

With five times more capacity than ordinary dispensers, the BOL countermeasure-dispensing system provides unrivalled defensive capability, and the time needed to carry out assignments successfully.

BOL, internationally recognised as today's most effective countermeasures dispenser, protects Tornado, Eurofighter Typhoon, Gripen, the UK's Harrier GR7, and the US Air Force and Air National Guard's F-15 Eagle. It is being installed in the Royal Australian Air Force's F/A-18 Hornet.

The BOA countermeasure dispenser used in the CAMPS system is based on the successful BOL series of non-pyrotechnic dispensing.

BOP COUNTERMEASURE-DISPENSERS

Saab also produces countermeasure dispensers intended for fuselage mounting, the BOP series. The BOP dispensers can be used on fighters as well as helicopters and transport aircraft. BOP countermeasure dispensers are integrated into our IDAS systems.

AIRCRAFT RADAR JAMMER SYSTEMS

The BOQ-X300 is a modular approach to self-protection and suppression of enemy air defence. The aircraft radar jammer system combines jamming capabilities with excellent situational awareness features.

BOQ-X300 operation is supported by an extensive suite of mission planning and de-briefing and analysis tools, allowing the user full control of aircraft radar jamming techniques and threat libraries.

The BOQ-X300 aircraft radar jammer system has been chosen by the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD), for evaluation on the Tornado.
